Description
Can HDMI, which is primarily used for video, be similarly enhanced for audio? Although HDMI is the primary method of transmitting audiovisual signals in consumer environments and works well with high-resolution audio and video, it has yet to gain a strong foothold in the hi-fi world.
Besides some non-technical factors, one of the biggest challenges with HDMI audio is the quality of the recovered clock from the HDMI signal and the electrical noise associated with it. Despite improvements in recent HDMI receivers, the restored clock continues to be plagued by significant phase noise. While this is usually not a problem for consumer audio, such as home theaters and soundbars, the shortcomings of HDMI audio become immediately apparent in critical listening. In addition, HDMI audio is known to be sensitive to electromagnetic interference, cabling quality, ground loops, and is generally considered inferior in the hi-fi world to specific digital audio transport methods such as SPDIF or AES/EBU.
In general, there is usually nothing wrong with the audio data itself, provided the receiver can handle all available digital formats and sampling rates on the source side. The problem is mainly in the way the audio data is packaged and merged with the video data into a high-frequency digital signal, and finally recovered on the HDMI receiver (sink) side. Although there are many inexpensive HDMI audio extractors on the market that can output digital audio via S/PDIF at sampling rates up to 192 kHz, they cannot compete with high-end digital transport systems in terms of audio quality.
What distinguishes the Vanity
PRO
from other HDMI audio extractors? In essence, the Vanity
PRO
addresses each HDMI audio problem individually and offers numerous additional features that other devices do not. For example, the Vanity
PRO
electrically isolates the HDMI portion from the sensitive audio and clock circuits to eliminate all noise and interference associated with video playback and HDMI signaling. Both isolated sections have separate power connections.
